Modern Savoy - Frankie Style, the way he danced, and was brought back 15 years ago, and since developed. Including Swedish style, etc. It's not the same as "Savoy," like it was done in the 20's, 30's.,
Hollywood - no explanation needed, including all "liked" styles such as LA, D.C., etc.,
Post Modern Savoy - What SF and Ithaca help developed over the past 2 years or so.,
Question: Is there such a thing as Post Modern Savoy?
[This message has been edited by Lionel (edited January 25, 2001).]

Where does 'swedish' style fit in? In appearance I think it is like modern savoy, but I know there is a strong emphasis there about maintaining your own balance/weight etc. Does Frankie advocate the same?

, You are opening a can o' worms, my friend ,
Of interest in note; Frankie Manning himself, I'm told, will tell you he hates the way that people try to break up dancing into styles with titles. To him it's either dancing or not.,
Not to say we all should be Frankie, because we're not (as unfortunate as some of us may feel about that) nor that we all have to think like him, etc. whatever. BUT I find it an interesting thought to ponder on. I find differing styles an intesting thing to consider when dancing, so as to know what your partner will be comfortable with, but sometimes (read: often) such lines being drawn can result in bad mojo and people seperating themselves from others.,
So continue I just wanted to add that little tidbit to be thought of as you talk and discuss.,

, I do tend to group styles of dancing into terms myself, it's quite hard to do not do so. For instance, in Pitts here they tend to change a few tings from Manning's Savoy - the follow travels basically a straight line, etc. This style could be lumped into that ithica style you discussed, the Post-modern Savoy, as it really isn't the Savoy that Manning teaches.,
However again, most times that you discuss such style differences, people classify things differently in their minds, have had different experiences that tell them different things, and slowly everybody ends up getting in some ways upset at someone else for 'not doing it right', or other such discussions. Somebody will always try to disagree with you or even Frankie (as I've had the experience of witnessing someone blatantly contradict his son Chaz Young not two minutes after he walked out after an entire weekend spent in workshops with him on the matter of Savoy Style). No matter how hard you try, something comes up, and hopefully you learn to just walk away...and into a partner, just in time for the next number from the box ,

One trademark of postmodernism is the tendency to borrow, quote, and create pastiches. In that sense, one notion of "postmodern lindy" is a dance that's borrowed from many traditions: Tango, WCS, Salsa, Hip-Hop, etc... These have blended together rather nicely, imho.,

Phlurg, that's exactly what I meant! ,
Perhaps the other thing about Post-Modernism is the self-consciousness of historical context and one's position in that timestream. ,
So just as I'm on count 5, I think to myself: "Would it be better to accentuate a Modern Savoy swing-out, given that I'm dancing in San Francisco at the Doghouse, or segue into a Dean Collins movie-inspired whip, given that Ken Burns' Jazz Part 4 just aired last night?",
Yeah, right. [sarcasm off],

I've heard "old school" used by Steven as what you define as modern Savoy.,
I've heard "freestyle" for what you call post modern savoy.,
I think if you are going to define you should not clump Hollywood, LA, and DC together. ,
You also did not mention smooth style which has been around since the 80's.,
But shouldn't we be so over all these terms, we all Lindy Hop, terms for styles have divided the Lindy Hop scene for allong time. There is still a prevelent "us" vs "them" in many scenes, based on the old Hollywood vs. Savoy or DC vs. Hollywood vs. Savoy. ,
Terms lead to seperation of groups, seperation leads to us vs. them, which leads to we are better then you because blah, blah, blah (fill in the blank).,

i dont think theres anything wrong with recognizing that there are many different styles of dancing, and that sometimes these styles evolve so much that they become essentially a new dance form. im glad lionel pointed out that there has been a beautiful evolution of lindy hop from what he calls "modern savoy" (aka "old school") to "post-modern savoy" or "freestyle" or whatever you want to call it. AS ALWAYS, it has mostly to do with the music behind the dance. because we're out there dancing to anything from "bad mamma jamma", to "mustang sally", to "c-jam blues", the dance is obviously going to look different from your classic "jumpin at the woodside.",
of course, i hope the dance continues to evolve and expand so that what we're doing today will soon also become "old school". labels can be stifling, but its also worthwhile to recognize how dancing-like music- changes over time.
