Did You Meet Someone Interesting Online?

My group Global Kids is involved in the production of an upcoming HBO documentary called "Meeting Online." We are looking for good stories that revolve around connections made on the Internet.

If you know someone, or you yourself, have met someone online and the relationship deeply affected you, then we want to hear from you. It could be anything from Internet dating to making a significant personal or professional connection.

The show will be directed by Emmy Award, Oscar-nominated director Robert Kenner ("Food, Inc.") and produced by Marc Weiss, creator of the critically-acclaimed public TV series "P.O.V." Watch the video intro to the project by Robert Kenner.

Head to http://meeting-stories.org to submit your story! I'm sure there are some good ones in the lindy community!

There are some things that even HBO won't air.

Not everyone wants 15 minutes of fame on reality television (and what, afterall, is a documentary, if not the original reality tv?).

Actually, I'm going to be on T.V. with someone I met online (did the interviews week before last, to air sometime in the next 6 months.) Maybe if I can shake this head cold + excessive surgery pain, I could think clearly enough to write up the story. After all, I was already willing to be on T.V. to promote our cause.

Well it's about time somebody try and do a doc about this phenomenon. I met my wife from Norway online. This was arguably completely random, but all but impossible, given the technology which allows that random exchange to blossom into something beautiful. I look forward to seeing this project when its complete.

And I met my nerdy fiancée online, even though we should have met years before the onlines were ever born, when he was an EMT for my college marching band while I was marching in it.

But because I never got injured or passed out or puked during a parade from dehydration, we didn't meet until a decade later, on okcupid.

(I also don't wanna be on the HBO thx)

Whether or not you wish to be on HBO, it would actually be a big help to us if you would submit your story on the website. Being on TV is totally optional!

Story submitted.

Writing it up made me think about how this is someone whom, if I'd met IRL, I would have dismissed as having nothing in common with me. The first impression she makes is not one that's appealing to me. Our politics, religious views, hobbies, family situations are all very different. But we found out through working together online that we have something deeper in common. I can't help but admire and relate to her character, now that we've got to know each other, and every time we get together, we have a great time.

Looks like we've extended our deadline for submission of stories until mid-April. If you have a story to tell, we'd love to hear it. They can be submitted anonymously, if you don't wish to be contacted or profiled later.

Check out these interesting tales that folks have submitted!

My sister here in the US met her UK husband online (he was in Manchester, UK & she was in Virginia) via a "Random Chat" on the old ICQ. For those who don't know, random chat was a button you pushed on the ICQ window that would go out and randomly pick ANYONE in the world online right then who had opted in for random chat as well and connect you two. You would only get to see their brief ICQ profile before confirming the invite and you couldn't enter any criteria for the type of person you wanted to chat with. It was kinda like a random pen-pal function.

I've met several boyrfriends online, the current one being a keeper. And of course many of you, as well as many people on another forum I am on.

I've met most of my true friends in person, but kept communicating with them on-line. Kinda-sorta the reverse, ya know?

I have met a few interesting people online, but I don't have a smashing, scintillating story to go along with it, really!

I clicked on a guy's myspace profile because the profile pic was a really beautiful painting. I commented on his work and we've been friends ever since. He's a super good egg, an excellent artist, and he met his wife online while he was living in Philly and she in Australia.

The other meeting that I can think of was that I was looking at OK Cupid to see my friend N's current dates. I came across a profile of a friend or two (from Yehoodi!) Then, I saw this guy's profile and there was something about it... he lived in my old 'hood, so I figured we'd have a few people in common, too. I wrote to him sans profile, including a link to myspace (so he could see who I am.) No big romance to report, but we went out a few times and are now friends. He was the first guy I really dated after I broke off my engagement, and he's super sweet.

For reasons I won't bore you (further) with, as a result of knowing him (and unbeknownst to him), I became better friends with one of my now favorite friends ever - through facebook!

Sorry it's not dramatic and action-packed with marriage, babies or a kidnapping involved!
