How Are You Celebrating Black History Month?
/Happy Black History Month! As you know, lindy hop has its roots in the African American experience, and continues to be practiced by Black dancers all over the world. In that spirit, we hope you all are celebrating and sharing the Black roots of lindy hop in your communities.
We would love to know what are some ways that you, your dances, schools, and events commemorating Black History Month. Here’s some examples:
Wednesday Night Hop in Palo Alto, California is offering free admission to their dance when you take the effort to go to a local Black history event. It’s great just seeing all the local opportunities there are in the San Francisco Bay Area to experience and support Black culture and history.
The Mobtown Ballroom in Baltimore is organizing on February 11 a free jazz dance and lecture featuring Barbara A. Jones from the Harlem Swing Dance Society.
In New York City, the Harlem Swing Dance Society is throwing a free dance concert in Marcus Garvey Park on February 21, featuring the Harlem Jazz & Dance Combo Band.
For the month of February, the Firehouse Swing Dance in San Diego is playing all Black music artists for all of our weekly dances.
An easy way to share the Black history of this dance is to give out our brochure on the history of lindy hop at your dance of school.
There are many more ways you can celebrate Black history this month, and all year long. We hope this helped inspire your own ideas.
